An in-depth exploration of the new FontLab 4, from basics to advanced scripting methods. Includes several practical exercises in a lab setting. All participants receive a free FontLab poster.


OpenType Workshop (9am-12:30pm, 1:30pm-5pm)
presented by Thomas Phinney, Adobe

Thomas Phinney will walk users through using Adobe's OpenType Font Development Kit (FDK) to make OpenType fonts with PostScript-based outlines. Special attention will be given to proofing and testing tools that can be used on all OpenType fonts, and to the Adobe "feature file" format which is also used by FontLab 4.

For the Masses: Typography and the Birth of the Mass Media (10am-11am)

In early 1890s America, a marginal medium - magazines - went supernova to create a new paradigm: consumer culture. Shinn analyzes the challenges the new media presented to U.S. magazine art directors, advertising typographers, and type designers, and follows their design solutions from the early days of the 20th Century, through the high art heyday of the 1960s, to the Last Days of typography in the 1980s, before digital culture changed all the rules.


Partners in Crime: The Business of Love and Work (11am-12pm)

Every new medium brings with it new problems and new capabilities. Panelists with unique experience in the field discuss the practical and creative aspects of development of typography for handheld devices.

An examination of different methods of showcasing type on the web. CGI, Flash, Director and other technologies are explored, with covered topics including aesthetics, portability, "steal"-ability, shortfalls and strengths, and adoption rates for required technology.



Marketing and Distribution for a Specialized Industry (5pm-6pm)

Reps from successful indie foundries compare notes with respected type distributors, examining innovative methods of marketing and distribution of typefaces and related creative products.


House Industries Exposed (6pm-7pm)
presented by Rich Roat

Roat, principal of the U.S.-based type foundry and creative partnership House Industries, will showcase over 400 pieces of original artwork and typography as he describes the company's influences on a wide range of projects. From type rooted in American Hot Rodding to a retrospective of the work of Swiss fashion and type designer Rene Albert Chalet, House Industries spans a full spectrum of international pop culture.


Chank Army Awards (8pm-8:30pm)
presented by Chank Diesel

Chank Diesel, Commander in Chief, explains the concept of the Chank Army and reveals the up-and-coming font designers who won the Chank Army recruitment contest. This is the first time the winners will be announced in public.

TypoLounge: All type Looks Good at Closing Time (8:30pm-11pm)

After the auction, step into the TypoLounge for a night of drinking, dancing and other semi-illicit activities. Wiggle Stick provides the soundtrack for the revelry. Be prepared for cameo appearances onstage by infamous type designer/musician hybrids, and take your own turn at the mike or behind the drum kit if you've got the nerve. Cash bar, munchies provided.

Scaling the Wall Between Lettering and Typography (9am-10am)

The noted sign painter and type designer will present examples of his digital fonts and painted signs and explain how American and European sign painting have influenced his work with the brush and the mouse. Downer will also demonstrate how how lettering and type design relate to one another and are linked to regional history.


Young Guns: The Faces of the Future (10am-11am)

Why on earth would anybody want to become a type designer? A group of relative newcomers to the field discuss how they became interested in type design, and how they managed to turn their obsession into a career.

Critical information for anyone creating (or using) typefaces in today's global society - Ivir presents design guidelines for the "euro" glyph. This two-part presentation focuses on typographic elements affecting the design of the glyph, and recommendations for font designers and manufacturers, with a presentation on elements affecting the design quality as well as the technical quality of fonts.



Future of OpenType (3pm-4pm)
presented by Thomas Phinney
Adobe takes the wraps off of new OpenType work in progress. Learn how Adobe is converting their entire type library to OpenType, check out the new 246-character ISOAdobePlus character set, and see an exciting technology demo of OpenType working seamlessly in a future version of Adobe InDesign.

Golgonooza: A documentary film by Gahlord Dewald and Shannon Robards

Dan Carr and Julia Ferrari make books using letterpress process. In addition, Dan is an active punchcutter; he makes type by carving letterforms into steel. This documentary explores the work of the Golgonooza Letter Foundry and Fine Press, their process, and their thoughts on the work. Produced by Manifold Media in association with Weeds Media.

New Type Gallery

The TypeCon2001 TypeGallery is an unjuried showcase of new type designs and typography from around the world. The TypeGallery will be on exhibit continuously during TypeCon2001, July 13-15, 2001, in Rochester, New York, USA.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION

- Any designer or foundry (commercial or independent) may submit a maximum of three new type designs for inclusion in the TypeGallery.

- TypeCon2001 attendees may submit up to three entries at no charge. Attendees who wish to submit more than three pieces must include a $10 fee per entry in excess of three. There is a $10 fee per entry for exhibitors not attending TypeCon2001. Entry fees are payable by credit card, check or money orders (checks must be drawn on US banks; international money orders are accepted from outside the United States). Credit cards are processed through P22; to pay by credit card, please call +1 (716) 885-4482.

- Fonts may be commercially available, proprietary or not available for distribution. Samples of hand-lettering may also be submitted.

- Type designs must have been completed and/or released between July 2000-July 2001.

- Each submission should be printed at 11 x 17 inches or A3 in size, and mounted flush to white foamcore board. Unmounted entries will NOT be exhibited.

- Entries may be in black-and-white or color.

- Boards should show one typeface or family in an optimal setting (showing the full character set is recommended).

- A typographic piece which is not a type specimen showing may also be exhibited. All fonts used must be noted.

- Include the name of the font(s), type designer, graphic designer, foundry, postal address and telephone number, and website URL.

- Please do not include advertising literature or pricing in specimens or other artwork to be exhibited.

- All submissions must arrive at the TypeCon offices by July 7, 2001.

- Submissions will not be returned, but may be picked up in person at the end of the conference.
